Dog-Friendly Beaches
The Gulf Coast is hard to beat for dogs who love the water. These beaches welcome leashed (and some off-leash) dogs — with year-round access and wide, sandy shorelines.
Dog Beach Park
The go-to off-leash dog beach in Southwest Florida. Dog Beach Park sits on Bonita Beach Causeway, just south of Lovers Key State Park, and gives dogs a wide stretch of Gulf-side sand where they can run free, wade in shallow water, and play off-leash. Waste bags and water stations are on-site. Open dawn to dusk; dogs must be under voice control, handlers must be 15 or older, and a maximum of two dogs per person are allowed. Proof of current vaccinations is required.
Fort Myers Beach (Leashed)
Dogs on a leash are welcome along portions of Fort Myers Beach, particularly on the northern end near Bowditch Point. It is a wide, flat stretch of Gulf sand that works well for early-morning or evening walks. Check current Lee County beach regulations before your visit, as seasonal rules and restricted areas may apply.
Dog Parks, Trails & Walking Paths
Beyond the beaches, Southwest Florida has an excellent network of fenced dog parks, shaded walking trails, and waterfront paths that make daily life with a dog genuinely easy. Whether you want a quick morning walk or a longer weekend hike, there is a spot nearby.
Naples Dog Park
A fully fenced off-leash park near Golden Gate with separate areas for large and small dogs, agility features, and plenty of shade. One of the most active dog communities in Collier County.
Freedom Park
A 55-acre park with paved walking trails, native landscaping, and a dog-friendly atmosphere. Great for leashed morning walks with water views and birding opportunities.
Bark Central Dog Park — Fort Myers
Lee County’s premier off-leash dog park with separate small-dog and large-dog areas, water features, shaded seating, and a welcoming community of regulars. Located off Six Mile Cypress Parkway.
Estero Community Park
A newer park with open green space, walking paths, and easy access to the Estero River trail system. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the park.
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Boardwalk
While dogs aren’t allowed on the boardwalk itself, the surrounding area in Estero has multiple neighborhoods with direct trail access and nature paths ideal for leashed walks.
Lovers Key State Park (Leashed Trails)
Dogs are welcome on the multi-use hiking and biking trails at Lovers Key State Park, as long as they are on a hand-held leash no longer than six feet. Dogs are not permitted on the park’s beaches, but the shaded trails through coastal hammock make for a peaceful walk. For off-leash beach time, head next door to Dog Beach Park.
Leash Rules to Know
- In Collier County (Naples), dogs are not permitted on the beach. Lee County is where you will find the area\u2019s dog-friendly beach options, with Dog Beach Park offering off-leash access.
- In Lee County (Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero), rules vary by park. Dog Beach Park (Bonita Beach Causeway) is the area\u2019s dedicated off-leash beach.
- Dogs are always welcome on-leash on public sidewalks, paved trails, and most neighborhood streets throughout Southwest Florida.
- Florida requires a current rabies vaccination and county pet license for all dogs. Collier and Lee County licenses are available online or through your vet.
Pet-Friendly Communities
Many Southwest Florida communities are designed with pets in mind — featuring on-site dog parks, walking trails, and pet-friendly HOA policies. These are a few standouts Larissa recommends to clients with fur babies.
Mediterra
A luxury master-planned community with miles of walking and biking trails, lush tropical landscaping, and a relaxed pet-friendly atmosphere. The trails wind through nature preserves and connect neighborhoods — perfect for daily dog walks.
Bonita Bay
One of the most established communities in the area, with over 1,400 acres of parks, nature preserves, and waterfront trails. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the community’s extensive trail network, and several residents organize regular dog-walking groups.
Pelican Landing
A well-maintained community with open green spaces, nature trails, and easy access to Barefoot Beach. The community’s layout encourages outdoor living, and the surrounding area has multiple pet-friendly parks and beaches within a short drive.
Quail Creek Country Club
A gated golf community known for its spacious lots, mature landscaping, and pet-friendly culture. The surrounding area connects to walking paths and is minutes from the dog-friendly areas of North Naples.
The Islands
A waterfront community along the Imperial River with kayak access, walking paths, and a neighborhood feel that welcomes dogs. The nearby Bonita Beach Dog Park is just minutes away for off-leash beach time.
Estero
Estero’s newer developments — including areas near Coconut Point and the Brooks — offer modern homes with trail access, proximity to Estero Community Park, and a growing pet-friendly infrastructure. It’s one of the most accessible areas for dog owners moving to the region.
Relocating with Pets to Southwest Florida
Moving with a pet takes a little extra planning, but Southwest Florida makes it easy once you are here. Here is what to know before the move — and how to make the transition smoother for your fur baby.
Vet Records & Vaccinations
Florida requires a current rabies vaccination for all dogs and cats. Bring copies of vaccination records, microchip information, and any prescription details to your new vet. Both Collier and Lee County have excellent veterinary networks, including specialty and emergency clinics.
Pet Licensing
Collier County (Naples) and Lee County (Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Estero) both require pet licenses. Registration is straightforward and can be completed online or through your veterinary office. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.
Climate Adjustment
The Florida heat is real — especially in summer. Plan walks for early morning or evening, invest in a cooling mat, and always carry water. Most dogs adjust within a few weeks, but brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs) may need extra care during peak heat months.
Finding the Right Home
When searching for a home, consider fenced yard access, proximity to dog parks or beaches, community pet policies, and walkability. Larissa can help you prioritize pet-friendly features during your home search — it’s one of the first things she asks clients about.
“One of the first questions I ask every client is about their pets. It tells me so much about the lifestyle they are looking for — and it helps me find the right community, the right home, and the right daily rhythm for their family.”
